People Use Snapchat to Sell Weapons

At least three people were arrested last year for illegally selling weapons using Snapchat. In two out of three cases, men supposedly acquired weapons in states that have weak legislative frameworks on this issue and used Snapchat to advertise their availability by posting photos and videos with weapons.

Snapchat prohibits ads that promote “firearms, weapons, ammunition, or related accessories”. The site’s rules state that the application should not be used for “any illegal activities”, including the purchase and sale of weapons. A Snapchat spokesperson said the company does not allow the promotion or distribution of illegal content.

Other social networks have faced similar problems with the illegal sale of weapons. Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal wrote about how firearms sellers continue to ignore Facebook restrictions three years after the site banned illegal sales. Instagram also ran into problems when sellers circumvented the ad ban.
