The American wholesale and retail network of Walmart stores recently filed an application for a patent of “smart” parcel tracking system with the help of the blockchain technology, as reported on the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office.
In its application, Walmart describes the patent as a “clever package” that can track environmental conditions, the location of the parcel and automatically record to the blockchain so that the owner of the parcel can accurately determine where the purchased goods are located. The technology can be used in tandem with other similar developments, for example “autonomous vehicles”, Walmart notes.
The trading giant also mentions such advantage of the development as: “online shopping has created shipping challenges for retailers, particularly with regard to perishable products”.
The development of this device will help to solve similar problems.
“These online customers many times seek to purchase items that may require a controlled environment and further seek to have greater security in the shipping packaging that the items are shipped in”.
