Tesla Model 3 is Now Completely Leather-Free Including a Steering Wheel
On Sunday, September 1, Tesla announced on its official Twitter account that Model 3 interior is now completely without leather, including a steering wheel. The company also promised that its future Model Y will also be fully vegan when it debuts in 2020. https://twitter.com/Tesla/status/1167904985348075520 Animal rights groups have been calling the automaker for years to rid their cars of animal materials. PETA representatives raised this issue at the company's latest meeting of shareholders, inspiring Elon Musk to do so. And if the seats and the door can be done without problems, then the leather-free steering wheel turned out to be a rather difficult task. “I believe we were close to having a non-heated steering wheel, that’s not leather,”-  Musk said at the shareholder meeting, according to TechCrunch (which reported this first). - “There are some challenges when [you] heat the non-leather material and also how well it wears over time.” PETA has been working with Tesla for the production of synthetic leather for many years. It also prompted other major automakers, such as General Motors, Volkswagen and Toyota, to abandon the use of animal products in their cars.  “By ditching leather, including in its car seats, Tesla is sparing countless cows the cruelty inherent in the leather industry and staying true to its focus on sustainability,” - PETA said last June.
