Artificial Intelligence Created New Material
Scientists from the California Institute of Technology had to use the “trial and error” method to create fundamentally new material. Experts involved artificial intelligence in creating the necessary material much faster without the need for many experiments. Scientists managed to create material of incredible compressibility and strength without experimenting. The next generation of materials should be adaptive, versatile and customizable. This can be achieved using materials with a dominant structure (metamaterials) that use new geometries to achieve unprecedented properties and functionality. According to the lead author of the work, inspiration came to him when examining the solar sails. He thought about the possibility of creating such a material, a large area of which could be compressed into a small volume. Then, he says, we could create bicycles, umbrellas and many other things that, if desired, can be folded into your pocket. Guided by machine learning, scientists produced two algorithms that together transformed fragile polymers into a light, renewable, and super compressible metamaterials. Scientists set up the macroscale program to develop materials with maximum compressibility, and the microscale was meant to develop compounds with high strength.
