Possible culprit of BTC theft from Bitfinex in 2016 arrested
A couple has been arrested in the United States, who, according to the Department of Justice, may be guilty of stealing about $4.5 billion worth of cryptocurrency from the Bitfinex exchange.
We are talking about Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein, who are to blame for the loss of 119.8 thousand BTC from the exchange in 2016. They, according to the US Department of Justice, confiscated 94 thousand BTC, which is equivalent to $4 billion.
It is noteworthy that the couple led a public lifestyle. Morgan is known online as the rapper Razzlekhan. Looking through her social media posts, netizens saw many references to her being guilty of stealing cryptocurrencies.
In one of the songs, she sings that she stole the password and funds from the account, writes in her social network account that she built a multi-million dollar business without attracting investments. And in one video on TikTok, she directly asks if she could steal $4.5 billion in BTC.
Most of the charges brought by the Ministry of Justice against Liechtenstein, but Morgan is also among the suspects. So, she is accused of hiding information about the presence of bitcoins on her account on one of the cryptocurrency exchanges.
For committed fraud, the spouses are punished with imprisonment for up to 25 years. However, this does not mean that the cryptocurrency will return to the Bitfinex exchange.
The US authorities are suspicious of this cryptocurrency platform due to the history with Tether (they have one creator) and non-compliance with KYC. Therefore, although Bitfinex has already filed a request for a refund, the Ministry of Justice is in no hurry to decide in its favor.
