Ethereum 2.0 and Scaling Issues

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that the scalability of the Ethereum base layer still has a long way to go. It is likely that the baseline blockchain will not be able to expand to the proper level in the next few years.

According to Vitalik, an extension based on the baseline of the application may not appear until after the last major phase of "Ethereum 2.0" is completed. Therefore, it may take several years. Vitalik said that in light of the current situation, he proposed that the entire Ethereum expansion be focused on a "Layer 2" solution. At the same time, he suggested that once “Ethereum Phase 1.5” is fully validated, then there will be little to no expansion issues.

If users are unsure if Ethereum Phase 1.5 can solve the capacity issue, they can use a trade-off method. Namely: using a small number of execution segments (for example 4-8) and a larger number of data segments. Buterin suggested creating a two-tier protocol right in a wallet like MetaMask or Status. He also stressed that a lot of work needs to be done on "inter-layer transfer of two protocols".

The two-tier solution can somehow become part of the protocol itself, while Ethereum 1.0 can be used as the Optimistic Rollup client.
