El estafador turco robó $120 millones en equivalente de DOGE a los inversores
Turkish media reported a massive scam involving the main meme coin, Dogecoin, in the amount of 1 billion lira, equivalent to $120 million.
After the crypto boom in recent years, many novice investors have come to the market, not ready for the fact that their desire to make money on a new asset class as quickly as possible can play into the hands of cybercriminals. One of these was a Turkish fraudster hiding under the nickname Turgut V.
As in most of these stories, the deceived investors were promised a quick profit of 100% in just 40 days from the moment of investing in Dogecoin mining. Many who are familiar with the industry were probably surprised that in principle, someone still believes in such “promises”. Unfortunately, there were not one or two such people, but as many as 1500. The amount of DOGE tokens that they entrusted to the scammer was 350 million Dogecoin, equivalent to 1 billion Turkish lira or 120 million dollars.
Turgut V told its investors that their deposits in DOGE will be used for mining, promising to increase their fortune in the shortest possible time. At first, profits were growing, and the attacker himself, together with the team, regularly contacted Telegram and Zoom contributors to convince them of the growth in investment and honesty of intentions. After four months of hectic activity, the project was abruptly closed, however, as were the associated social media accounts, and all funds were stolen by the attacker and his eleven accomplices.
The silence lasted until the defrauded investors turned to lawyers, and those turned to law enforcement agencies. Having learned about the incident, the General Prosecutor's Office of the Istanbul province of Kucukcekmece began an investigation into the incident, reaching out to the would-be businessman himself. As it turned out, the fraudulent project was managed by two people at once, three more were managers, one of whom was responsible for all the funds received on the account.
The result for Turgut V was a travel ban and a trial during which a verdict would be delivered. As for the rest of the participants, their preventive measure has not yet been announced.
