The Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia and other Wikimedia free knowledge projects, has recently changed payment processor from Coinbase to Bitpay. This act was made in order to allow users to donate in Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Bitcoin Core (BTC).
“Our donors have shown an increased interest for different cryptocurrencies, so accepting bitcoin cash was a natural next step,” said the director of payments and operations at Wikimedia Foundation. “We accept donations globally, and we strive to provide a large variety of donation options. It’s very important that we can get international donations processed in ways that are efficient and cost-effective.”
Free encyclopedia strove to find an universal payment solution and cryptocurrencies are obviously a good variant. Therefore, the company chose Bitpay which works with a lot of various non-profit organisations. The company reports that the number of donationation has recently raised up, the reason is that people seek for tax benefits.
Bitpay chief commercial officer commented on the situation:
“Bitcoin and bitcoin cash are one of the cheapest payment options available so more money goes to charity rather than paying fees. Wikimedia does so much good around the world that it is a privilege to help them raise money.”
We remind you that the company processed over $1 billion in transactions alone in 2018, its B2B payments record 225% increase in compare to 2017.
