Telegram is a cross platform cloud-based messenger that gained popularity all around the globe. It was developed by Pavel and Nikolai Durov in 2013. Late in 2017 Telegram had 180 million users and Pavel noted that this number increased by approximately 600 thousand people each day.
So, what is the nature of such a high popularity, considering the fact that by the time Telegram was launched other messaging apps like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger or Viber, have already existed for years? Telegram is fast, user-friendly and secure. It has one account on many devices and allows users exchange any kinds of files. Telegram is a cloud-based messenger and you can also use it as your cloud storage with the opportunity to send data from your “cloud drive” just in several taps or mouth clicks. But the main feature of Telegram is its extra security. Some countries even worry about that extreme anonymity as it was proved that ISIS members used Telegram for communication and propaganda. In addition, company’s lawyers filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights to appeal the ruling of a court fined Telegram for its refusal to provide Russia’s Federal Security Service with user messages encryption keys.
And what about the ICO? Telegram that by the way has no ads or paid services (and “there will never be”), is planning to create a blockchain-platform called Telegram Open Network (TON) with its cryptocurrency Gram and will hold the largest ICO ever. During the pre-sale, available only for some huge investors, the project was said to raise around $850 million. However the terms of the ICO, where the company plans to attract billions of dollars, still remain unknown, and there is not much official information about the token sale provided by Telegram.
Indeed, the ICO held by one of the most popular messengers of the world with Pavel Durov himself standing behind the project will hardly suffer from lack of trust. But why does the world actually need TON and Gram? Well, Telegram is planning as much as to revolutionize the blockchain technology, creating world`s first ‘mass-market” cryptocurrency. The platform will enable users to create their own cryptocurrency and hold ICOs. Besides, it will be possible to make transactions right in your messenger using Gram. Users will be able to purchase goods and pay for services directly in their Telegram. TON will have a unique blockchain software architecture with main and subsidiary blockchains. This will allow the service to process transactions in milliseconds, faster than VISA or MasterCard, and remain extra secure. Moreover, the project has another significant advantage – it is already based on millions of Telegram users.
Anyway, the upcoming Telegram ICO will be the biggest one ever and the project is really able to influence the cryptocurrency market and blockchain economy so significantly that these two “will never be the same again”. At the same time, it is in fact even difficult to say, whether this token sale event is an actual ICO. Telegram sells its coins “out of a public view”, and currently there is no official information that there will definitely be a public round and Gram tokens will be available for sale to every interested investor.
