Danny Ryan, the developer of the EIP-1011, announced the possible activation of the Casper FFG protocol and the technology of sharding simultaneously.

According to him, recent research confirms that the Casper upgrade can be activated in one of the shards, not by creating a smart contract, as planned. GitHub has already published details of the Python concept.
Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, believes that the combination of PoS-update Casper and sharding will probably make the main protocol of Ethereum more efficient in several dozen times.

In case the developers will be finally able to approve a new course, the update of Casper may not be practically realized during the forthcoming hard fork of Constantinople.
In theory, the launch of Casper will help to reduce the size of the deposit, which is required to participate in staking (1500 ETH to 32 ETH). Buterin believes that this will help to attract more participants.
If the implementation is successful, this innovation will not affect the main network, since it is possible to develop the update as a separate chain with its own rules. This also ensures increased security, since the conflict between the Casper nodes and the nodes of the shards is eliminated as a result.
