The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is going to send special robots to the International Space Station (ISS), which will perform the routine work of astronauts. The corresponding statement appeared in the official NASA microblog on the social network Twitter.
These robots are called “Astrobee”, they can work both in standalone mode and under the control of astronauts. Astrobee will be able to make minor repairs to the station, deliver various objects to people, and also conduct an inventory of tens of thousands of small objects that are located on the ISS. They can quickly find the desired item through special scanners. It is worth noting that such work takes a huge amount of time for astronauts now. In order to interact with objects, robots are equipped with a special mechanized arm-manipulator.
As we can see in the video, visually “Astrobee” is very similar to the robot vacuum cleaner. New robots are equipped with a computer vision system, due to which they can be well oriented in space. These robots will be able to move around the ISS through special fans. It is important to note that the robots can monitor the level of charge themselves and go to recharge on their own and in time.
