According to a recent statement of the Intel team, they intend to obtain a patent for a hardware “accelerator” for chips that are used for Bitcoin mining.
A method that can accelerate Bitcoin mining while reducing power consumption is described in a statement from Intel to the US Patent and Trademark Office.
As stated in Intel:
“Because the software and hardware utilized in Bitcoin mining uses brute force to repeatedly and endlessly perform SHA-256 functions, the process of Bitcoin mining can be very power-intensive and utilize large amounts of hardware space. The embodiments described herein optimize Bitcoin mining operations by reducing the space utilized and power consumed by Bitcoin mining hardware”.
According to Intel, the approach developed by them will help reduce energy consumption by 35% compared to general-purpose processors.
Intel also said that its concept is not limited to application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), their “accelerator” can be used in a number of other mining installations.
According to such a statement from Intel, it can be assumed that the technology giant also intends to influence the energy-intensive process in genetic sequencing.
