Developers want to introduce high-precision spinal cord stimulation technology to give people with spinal cord injuries the ability to move and feel.
The American company Intel, together with researchers from Brown University, launched a two-year project to create an intelligent gadget that will restore limb movement and control of the bladder after spinal injuries. The company claims, it`s time to use modern technology to fight this ailment – ZDNet reports.
Doctors from the Rhode Island Hospital and MicroLeads Medical employees who have developed high-precision spinal cord stimulation technology will take participation in the development. DARPA grant will provide part of the funding in the amount of $6.3 million.
The main goal of the developers is to create an autonomous implant that will return people with spinal cord injuries the ability to move and feel. When spinal has serious injuries, impulses from the brain cannot reach the muscles, it leads to paralysis. Unfortunately, the human body is not able to regenerate damaged nerve fibers.
Intel will provide hardware and software for the project, as well as help create algorithms that decode nerve impulses. The basis for special implants will be an artificial intelligence algorithm that will be implanted into volunteers with spinal cord injuries. The device will receive motor and sensor signals and transmit them bypassing the damaged area.
The implant will use an external computer system to decode the pulses first. However, it will become fully autonomous in the future.
