Burger King Is Launching a Whopper with Synthetic Meat

A popular fast food restaurant chain Burger King decided to explore its possibilities in creating meatless burgers, while making them taste as if they had real beef. The novelty is called the “Impossible”
whopper, and it is already available in some locations in the United States.

According to the report made by New York Times, Burger King will now offer its popular menu choice, a whopper (which actually is the main rival of McDonald’s Big Mac), but not with a regular beef patty inside, it is going to be synthetic, that is, purely plant-based.

The new fast food breakthrough was developed in the partnership with the company Impossible Foods, most likely, that’s how the burger received its name. The main ingredient of the synthetic burger patty is heme, a protein that can be extracted from roots of soy plants. Allegedly, a patty made of heme tastes just like beef, while containing zero animal products.

Impossible Foods published a detailed explanation of heme extraction and creation of genetically engineered food on their website.

Since the announcement came out on the 1st April, many people perceived it as an April Fool’s joke. However, after many authoritative news agencies confirmed the news, and the “Impossible” whopper actually made it to quite a few Burger King locations, it became clear that this was no joke.

Currently, the new beefless whopper is being given a taste trial in 59 restaurants near the city of St. Louis, Missouri. If the customers like it, it will be available in every single Burger King in the country and maybe even abroad.

So far, people enjoy the “Impossible” whopper and find it hard to detect whether it has real beef or not.

The Chief Marketing Officer of Burger King, Fernando Machado stated:

People on my team who know the Whopper inside and out, they try it and they struggle to differentiate which one is which.”

The new beefless burger might become a good alternative for traditional meat options and, if adopted massively, can even decrease the level of beef production in the country, which will undoubtedly please all the animal supporters. However, the “Impossible” whopper is still going to have mayo sauce, which is unsuitable for vegans.
