Cryptocurrency and Elections in Ukraine: How is the Owner of the WEX Crypto Exchange and the Election Campaign of Vladimir Zelensky Connected?

On 7th of April, an article was published on a website “Myrotvorets” stating that a candidate for president Vladimir Zelensky had been receiving financing from Russian special services. Journalists claim that Zelensky had been receiving money from the owner of the cryptocurrency exchange WEX Dmitry Havchenko.

This publication indicated that on February 25, 2019, information was received claiming that Andrey Pinchuk ordered Havchenko to cash cryptocurrency reserves and finance Zelensky’s election campaign with the received money. Workers of the “Myrotvorets” write that Pinchuk works for Russian special services, however, according to official information, he holds the position of Vice-Rector of MSTU “Stankin”.

Journalists stated that Vladimir Zelensky receives money from special services and terrorist organizations, one of them is “Union of Volunteers of Donbass” (SDD) created by Pinchuk. Havchenko holds the position of head of the SDD department, therefore, he has a link to Pinchuk. According to official data, the public organization protects the interests of Donbass volunteers and provides them with legal and medical assistance.

“Myrotvorets” journalists call on the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine to study materials exposing Zelensky and take urgent measures to guarantee national security. The Internet portal wrote a letter to representatives of the government of Ukraine, but they have not yet responded to it.

Vladimir Zelensky previously stated that his election campaign cost 70 million hryvnias. According to him, he spent his money, and also received a part from his friends, companions, and founders of the “Studio Kvartal 95”.

Where exactly the “Myrotvorets” journalists got information about the source of funding of the candidate for president, and how true they are, is still unknown.

It is possible that before the second round of voting in Ukraine, which will take place on April 21, such unconfirmed data is just an element of the information warfare.
