Europol Shut Down Two Major Dark Web Trading Platforms
As a result of the global operation, the two largest darknet markets were closed: the Wall Street Market and Silkkitie.
According to the Europol report, their activities were stopped by the German Federal Criminal Police (Bundeskriminalamt) and the Finnish Customs (Tulli).
Wall Street Market and Silkkitie are large-scale darknet markets where deals for buying and selling drugs, malware, stolen business data, and other illegal products were conducting.
“These two investigations show the importance of law enforcement cooperation at an international level and demonstrate that illegal activity on the dark web is not as anonymous as criminals may think”, Europol’s Executive Director, Catherine De Bolle, stated. One of the agency’s tasks is to create a coordinated law enforcement approach to tackle crime on the dark web with the participation of law enforcement agencies from across EU Member States and other countries. To achieve this goal, Europol has established a special team to reduce the size of this underground illegal economy.
